AmeriCorps is a U.S. national service program that engages thousands of Americans each year in intensive service to their communities, states, and the nation. The program was established in 1993 to provide opportunities for Americans to serve their country and communities while also earning money for education or paying off student loans. AmeriCorps members receive a modest living allowance while they serve, and they may also be eligible for education awards that can be used to pay for college or graduate school or to repay student loans. In some cases, AmeriCorps members may also receive loan forbearance or deferment during their service. AmeriCorps members have provided millions of hours of service to communities across the U.S. in projects related to education, disaster response, health care, and veteran assistance. The organization strives to build a culture of service and civic engagement among Americans of all ages and backgrounds.
