The Berkeley Math Tournament Group hosts and organizes mathematical contests for middle and high school students. In organizing these tournaments, the team strives to encourage mathematical exploration and understanding by introducing concepts not covered in the typical pre-college curricula to students with high mathematical aptitude and interest.

Each contest emphasizes collaboration between team members, while still allowing individuals to prove their own ability. Any individual currently enrolled in a pre-college institute for youth is welcome to compete, and accommodations may be made for teams with demonstrated financial need.

The competition takes various formats:

  • Berkeley Math Tournament (BMT):  BMT is open to high school students in grades 12 or below. In particular, there is no lower age limit to participate; advanced middle school students are welcome to compete. Teams may have up to 6 students. You do not have to be local to the Bay Area or California to register for BMT.
  • Berkeley Mini Math Tournament (BmMT): BmMT is open to middle school students in grades 8 or below. In particular, there is no lower age limit to compete in BmMT; advanced elementary students are welcome to compete. Coaches can register up to 5 students per team. There are no restrictions on how many teams/students a single coach can register. You do not have to be local to the Bay Area or California to register for BmMT.
  • Berkeley Math Tournament Online (BMT Online): The online, synchronous version of our flagship high school tournament! For those who are unable to travel long-distance to California, or weren't able to register for BMT due to capacity limitations, we're offering an online experience as well.

All competitions have four rounds: a 75-minute puzzle round, a 60-minute individual round, a 60-minute team round, and a 40-minute relay round. The top-scoring teams and individuals receive awards.
