The Berkeley Math Tournament is a University of California, Berkeley student-led organization that aims to spread mathematics and the spirit of mathematical competition globally by presenting students with interesting, original, hand-crafted problems. As of 2023, it was one of the largest student-run math competitions on the West Coast, with over 2,000 contestants.

The competition takes various formats:

  • Berkeley Math Tournament (BMT):  Open to teams of up to 6 students who are in grades 12 or below. Held in-person at UC Berkeley and at satellite locations. Advanced middle school and elementary school students are welcome to compete.
  • Berkeley Mini Math Tournament (BmMT): Open to teams of 3-5 middle school students 8th grade or below. Held in-person at UC Berkeley and at satellite locations. Advanced elementary school students are welcome to compete.
  • Berkeley Math Tournament Online (BMT Online): An informal, one-week, asynchronous tournament held online two weeks after BMT.

All competitions have four rounds: a 75-minute puzzle round, a 60-minute individual round, a 60-minute team round, and a 40-minute relay round. The top-scoring teams and individuals receive awards.
