Columbia University Engineering's Summer High School Academic Program for Engineers (SHAPE) is a selective pre-college program for rising sophomores, juniors, seniors, and recent high school graduates. Students will choose a subject and participate in a college-level, project-based engineering course as well as an elective course for the duration of a three-week session. Students can participate in one or both sessions. The program also features college preparation, support from Columbia students, and other workshops.

  • Session 1: July 7th - July 25th, 2025
  • Session 2: July 28th - August 15th, 2025

Cost/Compensation

  • Residential (Session 1 only): $10,790
  • Commuter: $5,875

Eligibility Requirements

  • Students entering grades 10-12 or recent high school graduates.

Deadline

  • Priority Deadline / Session 1 Residential Deadline: December 18th, 2025
  • After the priority deadline has passed, students will be accepted on a rolling basis until sessions are full

Application or Entry Requirements

  • A completed online application
  • Three essay questions
  • Students applying for residential are required to complete one additional essay question
  • Copy of most recent high school transcript, or a report card (submitted by applicant)
  • Letter of recommendation (submitted by a math or science teacher)
  • Resume with work experience or school and extracurricular activities (submitted by applicant)

Notifications of Decisions

Financial Aid Details

  • SHAPE has a limited number of need-based scholarships, which cover the full cost of the tuition and fees. Priority for scholarship are given to those who complete and submit the documents and SHAPE application (including the requests for transcripts and letters of recommendation) by December 18, 2024.
  • Financial aid for students who attend NYC schools Districts five and six will be prioritized for need-based funding.
