Every year, EngineerGirl hosts a contest dealing with engineering and its impact on the world. The topic and detailed instructions for the contest are usually posted in September, with a deadline for submissions in early February of the following year.

The competition is open to students in grades 3 through 12, with rules and requirements varying depending on the category (Elementary School, Middle School, or High School).

Submissions are judged by volunteers, including professionals from a variety of engineering backgrounds. Winners in each grade category are announced in the summer, and receive the following prizes:

  • $1,000 for 1st place 
  • $700 for 2nd place 
  • $500 for 3rd place

Eligibility Requirements

  • Open to students in the following categories: 
    • Elementary School Students: grades 3-5
    • Middle School Students: grades 6-8
    • High School Students: grades 9-12
  • Home-schooled and international students must choose an appropriate category based on where they would be placed if attending public school in the US
  • Prior winners of the EngineerGirl writing contest may not enter again in the same age group

  • Entrants should submit their work through the online entry form
  • Submissions must include the full text of the essay and, if required, a full reference list
  • All submissions must be original work

Founded in 1964, the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) is a private, independent, nonprofit organization that provides engineering leadership in service to the nation. Its goal is to advance the welfare and prosperity of the United States of America by providing independent advice on matters involving engineering and technology, and by promoting a vibrant engineering profession and public appreciation of engineering. The NAE is part of The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, and currently has more than 2,000 peer-elected members and international members, senior professionals in business, academia, and government.
