The High School Journalism Institute is an outreach program of The Media School at Indiana University that promotes and supports high school journalism education. Our annual summer workshops provide hands-on, immersive training opportunities for both students and teachers.

Whether you’re just getting into journalism or have years of experience, these student workshops provide you with the tools to learn new skills and sharpen your existing talents. Through hands-on experience, interaction with high-grade equipment, and instruction from field professionals, you’ll receive important tips, tutorials, and resources to help you pursue your passions.

Schedule

  • Session 1: July 7th - July 11th, 2025
  • Session 2: July 13th - July 17th, 2025

Cost/Compensation

  • Program Fee: $525
  • The program fee includes instruction, on-campus lodging, supervision, and an 8-swipe meal card.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Rising high school freshmen through current high school seniors

  • HSJI offers two scholarship opportunities for eligible students: Multicultural Scholarships and the Bloomington Press Club Scholarship.

The Media School at Indiana University is a dynamic institution dedicated to providing students with comprehensive education and training in the fields of journalism, media, and communication. Established in 2014, The Media School represents a merger of several departments within the university, including journalism, telecommunications, and communication and culture, to create a cohesive and interdisciplinary approach to media education. The school offers a broad range of undergraduate and graduate programs, including degrees in journalism, media studies, film production, and strategic communication, providing students with opportunities to develop skills in writing, reporting, digital media production, and media analysis. With a faculty comprised of experienced professionals and scholars, The Media School emphasizes hands-on learning, critical thinking, and ethical practice in all aspects of media production and consumption.
