The High School Internship Program provides qualified New Mexico high school seniors the opportunity to develop skills and gain work experience while receiving exposure to a variety of career fields. Internships are available in both STEM and other career fields such as business or operations support. This applies to current High School seniors and rising seniors.

The best way to improve your chances of getting an internship at the Lab is to reach out to prospective mentors working on projects that align with your academic and professional interests.

Cost/Compensation

Eligibility Requirements

  • Be a senior in high school at the time of internship.
  • Be at least 16 years of age at the time of internship.
  • Have and maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75 on a 4.0 scale.
  • Attend a high school located in New Mexico.
  • Pass a pre-employment drug test.

  • Spring: December 31st, 2024

  • Cover letter - The cover letter should describe key aspects of the applicant's background and include two or three academic and career areas of interest.
  • Internship positions are competitive and the decision to hire students rests entirely with the mentor. Once a mentor has narrowed their search, they will contact the student directly to conduct a phone or in-person interview.

Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) was established in 1943 to conduct scientific research for the Manhattan Project, an allied effort that developed the world’s first atomic weapons. Located about 35 miles northwest of Santa Fe, LANL is a multi-program, federally funded research and development center for the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). LANL's priority roles are serving as a nuclear weapons design agency and a nuclear weapons production agency; addressing nuclear threats; and performing national security science, technology, and engineering.
