Meals on Wheels is a nationwide network of community-based, nonprofit programs dedicated to providing home-bound senior citizens and other individuals with nutritious meals. Currently, over two million people in the U.S. serve as Meals on Wheels volunteers. While meal delivery is the most common role, there are some opportunities for duties such as kitchen help. Volunteer schedules are flexible and can typically be adjusted to accommodate volunteers’ needs; a standard shift is no longer than an hour and a half and can be completed as often as desired, whether once a week or once a month. Eligibility and application requirements vary according to each Meals on Wheels program, and background checks are typically conducted.
