The NYU Center for Mathematical Talent (CMT) aims to solidify and extend work done on recognizing and supporting mathematical talent for pre-collegiate students in New York City. By identifying talented students from all backgrounds, The Center supports growth with extracurricular math activities in after-school programs where students are exposed to problem solving that is different from what is usually seen in the school classroom. The Center also develops new training materials for instructors. CMT’s signature curriculum is called “Finding Math” which consists of sets of activities that shows the surprising way one uses mathematics in much of our thinking.
CMT's Summer Math Program for Young Scholars Program is an intensive online 3-week summer program for mathematically talented high school students. It provides a mathematically rich environment to high school students interested in mathematics, and is designed to encourage them to consider careers in the mathematical sciences. In this program, selected high school students in grades 9 through 11 are introduced to undergraduate level math topics while building problem solving skills. In past years, topics included, but are not limited to number theory, group theory, graph theory, knots and surfaces, and computer science. All lectures will be led by Courant faculty. Each lecture will be followed by a problem session led by a graduate student teaching assistant where students will work collaboratively in groups. One session every week is set aside for mathematical games and puzzles. There is also a talk at the end of each day, covering topics about how math is used in different fields of science as well as college admissions and college life. Academically strong applicants coming from underserved communities are especially encouraged to apply. It is a non credit college program and does not provide housing.
At this time, NYU CMT is not accepting International Students.
