The Scripps Research High School Student Summer Internship Program is a paid research internship that gives high school students who attend school in Palm Beach or Martin County, Florida the opportunity to conduct basic biomedical research in a laboratory under the supervision of a Scripps Florida scientist. The program emphasizes the scientific process, research planning, bench experience, experimental design, data analysis, and interaction with laboratory personnel. Student participants also attend scientific seminars throughout the course of the summer that introduce them to a wide array of research topics.

Prior to their arrival on the Scripps Florida campus, all students selected for the program will attend a one-week, comprehensive introductory course that covers techniques and applications that are standard in biomedical research. The course is offered by the Biotechnology Program at Palm Beach State College (Palm Beach Gardens Campus) and provides students with a foundation of basic skills necessary to succeed in a biomedical research laboratory.

Students are expected to work full time in a Scripps Research Florida laboratory for an eight-week period, Monday through Friday, 40 hours per week. Students must arrange for daily transportation to and from the Scripps Florida campus in Jupiter. Scripps Research does not provide transportation or housing arrangements for program participants.

In addition to attending weekly seminars during the summer, students are expected to:

  • Submit a written scientific abstract at the conclusion of the program
  • Make an oral presentation at the conclusion of the program

While students of all ethnic and cultural groups are considered and accepted into the program, a special emphasis is placed on identifying and recruiting students who are historically underrepresented in the sciences (e.g., African-American, Hispanic, Native Pacific Islander or Native American students).
